“Flashback” (13.8 x 19.7 inches / 35 x 50 cm) depicts a reserve soldier leading the morning prayer on the Gaza beach, reflecting on his childhood in Neve Dekalim just before the 2005 disengagement. As he lifts the Torah, memories flood back, and he silently vows, “We will return and rebuild.”

Description

It’s the Jewish month of Av.
A reserve soldier leads the morning prayers on the beach of Gaza.
As he lifts up the Torah scroll for the traditional  “hagba”, everything around him blurs.

The year is 2005. He’s 9 years old, waving the Israeli flag by his home in Neve Dekalim in Gush Katif.
It’s a few days prior to the 9th of Av, the date slated for the disengagement of all Jewish inhabitants from Gaza.
He looks up to the Menora that decorates the main synagogue.

He suddenly returns to himself – a soldier, husband, father…
And whispers in his heart – we will return and rebuild.
